D.C. Trip - Day 3

Day 3 of our trip was supposed to include Ryan and Caroline and the kids.  But Lucas wasn't feeling well and Lincoln wasn't really willing to spend the day in Mount Vernon.  But Ryan joined our travels.   So off we went to visit George Washington's home.
The view from Mount Vernon.

Martha sounds like an incredible woman.  The day we were there was her 281st birthday.
President Washington was able to maintain and add on to his father's property at Mount Vernon with Martha's help.  She was a widow with children, but had some money.  It sounds like George and Martha had a great love story.  And I was most impressed with Martha's work on the front lines during the Revolutionary War.
The Washington's Burial Ground
A memorial to Washington's slaves.  My favorite quote from Lincoln after learning that Washington had slaves is, "So is he a good guy or a bad guy?"  Tough question to answer.  President Washington did free his slaves in his will.
Ford's Theatre where President Lincoln was shot.
We then went back to D.C. for the afternoon.  We tried to go to the Ford's Theatre, but it was closed for an event.  But the theatre is still a working theater.  Across the street was the home where President Lincoln actually passed away early the next morning.  It has been said that President Lincoln was the final death of the Civil War.

Outside the home where President Lincoln died.  Right across the street from Ford's Theatre.
We then went back to the Holocaust Museum.  Ryan hadn't been there, and we got tickets to go through the actual exhibit (which weren't available the day before).  We had 1 1/2 hours to go through the exhibits, but we definitely did not have enough time.  I LOVE this poster outside of the museum.  Great thing to think about.

The Pentagon from the freeway.
This was one of my most favorite days in D.C.  I loved the peaceful time at Mount Vernon, and the compelling exhibits at the Holocaust Museum.

  1. So amazing the things people did throughout history. I am sad the boys were sick and Caroline missed out but happy that Ryan was able to come along. Lucky guy.
